GadgetNest Workplace Health and Safety Overview

At GadgetNest, the safety and well-being of our employees and customers are paramount. As a Western Australian-owned and operated company, we adhere strictly to the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act 2020 (WA) and the Work Health and Safety (General) Regulations 2022 (WA), collectively known as the WA WHS laws.

These laws are regulated by WorkSafe WA, a division of the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, which ensures that businesses like GadgetNest comply with all health and safety requirements. Breaches of these laws can result in significant penalties, including fines, business closure, and even imprisonment.

WHS laws are designed to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for everyone. Every worker in Australia has the legal right to expect a safe workplace, and it is the responsibility of employers and business owners to ensure these safety measures are in place. GadgetNest is committed to maintaining these high standards, recognising that a safe workplace not only protects employees and customers but also drives business success.

Our safety policies reflect a commitment to reduce risks, promote employee well-being, and meet the requirements of both the WHS Act and WorkSafe WA guidelines.

What's the difference between an Act and a Regulation?

Acts are legislation passed by the Parliament. They cover broad principles.
Regulations, Rules and Codes are the guidelines and details that show how the Act is applied.

Risk Assessment Matrix & Hierarchy of Controls

A risk assessment is a systematic process used to identify potential hazards in the workplace, evaluate the risks associated with those hazards, and determine appropriate measures to control or eliminate those risks. The purpose of a risk assessment is to ensure the safety and well-being of employees, customers, and anyone else who may be affected by workplace activities.

A risk assessment matrix is a tool used to evaluate and prioritise risks by assessing the likelihood of an event occurring and the potential impact or severity of the consequences. It helps organizations like GadgetNest visually represent risks, making it easier to determine which risks need immediate attention and which ones are less critical. The matrix allows users to rate risks as low, medium, or high, depending on their probability and impact, guiding decision-making in risk management.

The Hierarchy of Controls is a framework used to minimize or eliminate workplace hazards by applying control measures in order of effectiveness. It provides a structured approach for managing risks and is a key principle in workplace health and safety (WHS) practices, including those at GadgetNest. The hierarchy is arranged from the most effective control methods at the top to the least effective at the bottom.

    • Emergency Contacts:

A list of emergency contacts is posted near all workstations, including numbers for emergency services and internal safety officers.

    2. Hazard Identification and Risk Management

    • Reporting Hazards:

All employees are required to report any hazards they encounter in the workplace. This includes faulty equipment, slippery surfaces, and blocked exit routes. Reports should be made immediately to a supervisor or the designated WHS officer. A template of a report is found on Canvas.

Employees should follow safe lifting techniques by keeping their back straight, bending their knees, and using their leg muscles to lift.

    • Use of Equipment:

Where possible, mechanical aids such as trolleys or lifting devices must be used to move heavy items. Employees should be trained on how to use these devices safely.

    5. Electrical Safety Policy

Any faulty electrical equipment must be reported immediately to the WHS officer or store manager. The equipment should be tagged as “out of order” and removed from use until repairs are completed.

    6. Incident Reporting and Investigation

    • Reporting an Incident:

All workplace incidents, including near misses, must be reported immediately. This includes injuries, unsafe conditions, and equipment malfunctions. Employees must complete an incident report form, which will be reviewed and investigated by the WHS officer.

    • Investigation Process:

All incidents are investigated to determine their root cause and to prevent future occurrences. Employees involved in the incident may be asked to provide additional information during the investigation process.
